The gear guide / Lighting

Choose a flashlight for the outage, not just the lumen number.

Compare useful light modes, charging and storage controls. A high maximum output and a long maximum runtime describe different things.

A model to consider / Manufacturer information

Fenix E35R

What is it?

A handheld rechargeable flashlight. Fenix lists a maximum output of 3,100 lumens, USB-C charging and an included 21700 lithium-ion battery.

Who is it for?

A candidate for someone who wants a light aimed independently of their head and has a plan to keep its rechargeable battery ready.

How is it used?

Use the side switch to select the needed mode and follow the model’s charging instructions. Learn the lock function before packing it.

Main limitation

Maximum output is not sustained for the entire advertised runtime. Heat and battery voltage can cause the light to reduce output; charging also needs an available power source.

This is a reading of published specifications, not a hands-on test.

Read the manufacturer’s specifications ↗

Picture the task before comparing specifications.

Think about what you expect to do with the light: find an item, check something across a room or move while carrying a bag. Then compare where you need the beam and whether a hand will be available to hold the light.

Our headlamp guide covers a different format. It is worth comparing the two forms before making the decision solely on a brightness figure.

Read one mode at a time.

The Fenix E35R is a candidate from our research, not a model we have tested. Fenix’s maximum-output figure describes a capability under its stated conditions. Its instructions describe output reduction as heat builds or battery voltage falls.

When comparing lights, keep a simple note for each: the mode you expect to use, its stated output and the matching runtime conditions. This makes it harder to compare one product’s brightest mode with another’s lowest-power setting by accident.

Treat charging as part of the purchase.

Fenix lists an included rechargeable battery and USB-C charging for the E35R. Confirm the package and compatible battery against the actual unit’s instructions. Do not assume that a battery fitting physically means it is approved for that revision.

The power-bank guide covers a possible backup source; check the charging requirements of both devices before pairing them.

Before buying, decide where the light and cable will live and when you will check readiness. A rechargeable model may fit your setup well, but the connector by itself is not a backup power plan.

Learn the controls while there is light.

Read the current instructions for lockout, charging and storage. Fenix warns about heat and accidental activation in enclosed spaces. Those details matter more in a packed bag than a photograph of the light’s beam.

If you intend to carry the flashlight, make access part of your backpack check. Locate it deliberately rather than leaving it at the bottom under unrelated equipment.

Compare what you need, then verify the exact model.

Write down your three requirements before opening a shopping listing: how you want to hold or place the light, the mode that suits the job, and how you will power it. Check the complete model name and included items against those requirements. We do not claim a price, stock status or performance ranking here.

A few useful answers

Questions before you choose.

Does the longest runtime apply at maximum brightness?

No. Compare output and runtime within the same mode. The E35R also reduces output under specified heat or low-voltage conditions; a runtime total does not promise constant maximum light.

Does the E35R use ordinary AA or AAA batteries?

No. Fenix specifies a compatible 21700 rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Use the battery types permitted for the exact model and revision, following its instructions.

Should I choose a flashlight or a headlamp?

Consider the task. A handheld light can aim separately from where you look; a headlamp leaves your hands free. Neither format is automatically the better choice for every outage task.
